Airports of Mauritius

Airports of Mauritius Co Ltd works in close collaboration with all stakeholders to meet international requirements in terms Aviation Security. AML as the licensed airport operator of the SSR International Airport, provides security services in the New Passenger Terminal.

Apart from AML, other agencies concerned with security at the airport are namely: the Department of Civil Aviation, specialised units of the Mauritius Police Force and other law enforcing agencies, as well as private security companies.

Restrictions on Liquids, Aerosols and Gels in Cabin Baggage (LAGs)

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs)

In line with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), security restrictions for carriage of LAGs on board are as below:

All LAGs (liquids, aerosols and gels) items carried in hand baggage must be stored in containers of capacity not exceeding 100ml / 100gm / 3.40z. Containers larger than 100ml will not be accepted, even if they are partly filled;

Containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of not exceeding one litre or less, which must seal completely;

The plastic bag must be presented separately from other hand baggage for inspection at the security point. Only one transparent plastic bag per passenger is permitted;

To facilitate screening and to avoid a cluttered x-ray image, such plastic bags containing the items should be presented apart from other cabin baggage, coats/jackets or laptops for separate x-ray screening.



Exemptions could be made for medications (upon medical certificate), baby milk (may be asked to taste) / food and special dietary requirements (medical Certificate), subject to verification. Passengers may be requested to verify the nature of such liquids, aerosols and gels;

  • Baby food/drink: If you are travelling with an infant younger than two years of age (0-24 months), baby food, milk, formula, water and juice are allowed.
  • Breast milk: Passengers flying with their child can bring breast milk in quantities greater than 100 ml
  • Prescription medicines are allowed.
  • Essential non-prescription medicines, such as homeopathic products, pain relieving medication, cough syrup, decongestant spray, gel-based nutritional supplements, saline solution or eye care products, are allowed.
  • Gel and ice packs are allowed, if they are needed to treat an injury, to refrigerate baby food, milk, breast milk, formula, water and juice for infants younger than two years of age (0-24 months), or to preserve medically necessary items or medication
  • Liquids/gels for diabetes: Juice or gels if you need them for diabetic or other medical conditions.

Documentation to support any medical needs or condition is not required; however, it contributes ease the screening process. Any medical documentation should be presented to security along with the medically necessary items.


Transfer Passengers  

Transfer passengers (passengers making direct connections between two different flights) are informed that:

The same security measures and restrictions apply as for originating passengers. 

As from 17 September 2014, transfer passenger with duty free goods packed in Security Tamper Evident Bag (STEB) shall be accepted at the cabin baggage screening on the following conditions;

  • The STEB is as per ICAO Requirement.
  • The passenger must show proof of purchase
  • The bag does not show any indication of tampering or  is opened
  • The bag may be subjected to additional screening to detect traces of explosives
  • Passengers who will be transiting or transferring at another airport (s) must confirm with their aircraft operator or airport duty free retailers whether LAGs carried in duly packed STEB will be accepted during transit at a foreign airport.

Filming and Photographing at Airport

Passengers are informed that baggage/ items above 95cm in height and width will not be processed through AML hold baggage screening, and therefore are requested to contact their respective airlines for necessary action.

Access to Terminal Building

Anyone requiring access in the airport controlled and restricted zones should have a valid reason and should make an official request at the Department of Civil Aviation directly or through the appropriate organisation for onwards recommendation to have an access permit.

Health Safe Technology

X-ray machines used at SSR International airport for the purpose of security screening are health safe as certified by its manufacturers.
